Eleanor Charlotte Payne was born February 6, 1935, in New York City, New York, the daughter of Lester and Mary Anne (McSweeney) Buckley. She grew up in New York and attended Walton High School, an all girls school in the Bronx, graduating in 1953. After her schooling she joined the WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, the US Navy's corps of female members and served as a medical administrative assistant at Alameda Naval Air Station in California.
On September 18, 1953, Eleanor was united in marriage to Jerry Payne in Alameda, California. After their discharges from military service they returned to Nebraska in 1954. Jerry's first teaching job took them to Hamburg, Iowa, and in 1963, they moved to Algona. Eleanor worked as a teacher's aide in the Algona Middle School for 29 years, retiring in 2000.
Eleanor enjoyed writing poetry, reading, scrapbooking, helping at the library and visiting with her neighbors. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Eleanor died Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society - Algona. She was 85.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Payne of Algona; children, Dennis and Colleen Payne of Omaha, Nebraska; Kathy Berg of Algona; Mark and Vivian Payne of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jeff and Melanie Payne of Algona and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter Buckley, Bill Buckley and a sister, Peggy Luber.
