Richard George Thompson, 88, of rural Algona, Iowa died on December 17, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society, Algona.
Richard was born on December 1, 1932, to Dr. Richard H. Thompson and Elsie D. (Chittenden) Thompson in their home in Burt, Iowa. He attended school in Burt and graduated from Burt High School in May of 1950. He then attended the University of Iowa for three years before he was drafted in September of 1953 at the end of the Korean War and part of the Cold War struggle to serve his country in the US Army. He was stationed in Europe (Germany) for 19 months, serving in the armored artillery FDC (Fire Direction Control.)
After being honorably discharged on September 1, 1955, he returned home to farm the family farm, a Century Farm near Irvington, Iowa, that has been in the family since 1855.
He is survived by his sister, Alice L. Reseland of Owatonna, MN; nephew Richard E. Reseland (Karen) of Owatonna, MN; nephew Erik T. Reseland (Brooke) of St. Anthony Village, MN, and three grandnieces Elsa, Adeline, and Emily Reseland. He is preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Phebe R. (Chittenden) Thompson.
