Helen Pauline, daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Bierstedt) Gade, was born on December 24, 1934 in Algona. Helen was baptized on February 3, 1935, and confirmed on April 10, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona. She received her education, grades 1-4 at County School; grades 5 and 6 at Trinity Lutheran School; and grades 7-12 at Algona Public Schools, graduating in 1953. She was active in 4-H, later becoming a leader, and in Church Youth Group. She was a legal secretary for Hutchinson, Carol and Hutchinson Law Firm following graduation.
On December 11, 1955, she was united in marriage to Duane Lieb at Trinity Lutheran Church. Five months later she joined her husband stationed at Sembach AFB, Germany, serving the U.S. Air Force Security Service. They lived with a German family for over two years. Traveling to Holland during tulip time, Paris, and Brussels World Fair were among many places of interest visited during her stay. After returning from military duty, they farmed in the Lotts Creek area, working together for over 40 years. She always raised a large garden. She and Duane were blessed with three daughters: Sheryl (born in Germany), Karen, and Marcia.
Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran and in 1958 became a member of Immanuel Lutheran - Lotts Creek. She was very active in LWMN, serving as an officer locally and in the Zone for many years. She attended Iowa District West LWML Conventions and some National Conventions as well. Helen was also a Sunday School teacher and a 4-H leader for many years. Helen enjoyed playing golf, reading, and art. She and Duane enjoyed traveling. They visited Europe several times, toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Italy, England, and Scotland over the years. Helen and Duane visited their children in New York City, Connecticut, Florida, and Texas. They also enjoyed attending the Palm Springs, CA International Foreign Film Festival for many years.
In 2011, she transferred to Trinity Lutheran Church after moving to Algona. She joined Trinity LWML and the quilting group. She loved to sew and enjoyed making clothes for her daughters and herself in the early years. Later, she did sew professionally, having her own business, Helen's Window Fashions.
Helen died Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society, Algona. She was 85.
She is survived by her husband, Duane of Algona. They recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Also survived by her daughters, Sheryl (Dale) Campbell of San Antonio, TX, Karen (Lee) Sloan of Brenham, TX, Marcia (Gene) Hanna of Lone Rock; grandchildren, Emily (Chase) Moser and their daughter, Grace of Solon, Tyler (Hannah) Campbell of Tijeras, NM, Leigh Campbell of Dallas, TX; sisters, Lucille (Al) Bonde of Algona, Eunice (Rev. Ralph) Wiechmann of Ashburn, VA; brothers-in-law, Eugene (Marge) Lieb of Waverly, Fran (Kay) Lieb of Blue Springs, MO; sister-in-law, Jane (Jim) Vehling of Maple Wood, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Arthur and Lillian (Bierstedt) Gade; and sister, Dorothy (Gerald) Pedersen.
