Patrick Edward Garry was born June 16, 1930, in Bancroft, Iowa, son of Thomas D. and Florence (Sandschulte) Garry. He grew up in Bancroft, graduating from St. John's Catholic High School in 1948. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1958. Pat met Theresa Marie Oxley in Iowa City, and they married on July 23, 1955, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Corwith, Iowa. They were blessed with a happy marriage of nearly 60 years.
Pat began his medical career in general practice in Dyersville, Iowa. In 1965 he and his growing family moved to Illinois where he completed a residency in pathology. He worked for many years at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, and retired in 2000. While he was there, Pat chaired the ethics committee and ran the clinical laboratory. He retained his interest in medicine after retiring and read the New England Journal of Medicine every week until just shortly before his death.
Family always came first for Pat, and he loved the family trips to Nassau and to Quetico. The Cubs were his favorite baseball team, and he greatly enjoyed seeing games at Wrigley Field. He never turned down a beer at those games or a gin and tonic after a round of golf. In order to be closer to his family, Pat and Theresa moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 2013.
Patrick died Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Carondelet Village Care Center in St. Paul. He was 88.
Patrick is survived by six children and eleven grandchildren: Michael Garry and his wife Nancy of Rockford, Illinois; Timothy Garry and his wife Valerie of Banchory, Scotland, and their children Bethany, Neil, and Rhona; John Garry and his wife Barbara of St. Paul, Minnesota, and their children Thomas and Sam; James Garry and his wife Alison DeLaval of Washington DC, and their children Claire, Beatrice, Hugh, and Eleanor; Alice Cusick and her husband Mark of Jackson, Michigan; and Thomas Garry and his wife Elizabeth Sipe of St. Paul, Minnesota, and their children Finn and Madeleine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Margaret in 1982; his wife Theresa in 2015; two brothers, Richard and John; and sister Louise.
