Michael John Frankl was born in Algona on May 3, 1944. As the son of Gerald P. and Rita (Kunkel) Frankl, Mike grew up in the Irvington area, graduating from Garrigan High School in 1962.
Mike married the love of his life, Jane Grandgenett, on August 8, 1964, at St. Benedict Catholic Church. They raised, taught and loved their six children on a hog farm near Irvington, passing on the life lessons they learned in their own farm upbringings. Mike was proud to be a member of the Kossuth County Pork Producers Association and presently was on the Heartland Mutual Insurance Board. In earlier years, Mike was named the first Outstanding Young Farmer in Kossuth County by then Gov. Ray.
Mike was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, never putting anything above the needs of his family. At the same time, he was an unwavering friend who loved every person he met, giving of his time and his self. Bishop Garrigan School and St. Cecelia Catholic Church were very important to him as he served on many of their boards and committees.
Mike's life work was serving and loving his family. He savored the moments of family gatherings at home, time spent at the lake and being the proud spectator at his grandchildren's activities. They always knew him by his cheers and that booming whistle. Mike died Friday, July 9, 2010, in Brainerd, Minnesota, enjoying time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Frankl of Algona; his children and grandchildren, Jerry and Amy Frankl of Ames and their children, Anna, Michael and Christian; Laura and Jeff Pedersen of Sioux City and their children, Thomas, Rebecca, and Nicole, and his great-grandson Grant; Jim and Amy Frankl of Akron and their children Alexander James, Spencer Patrick, and Reagan Curtis; Janette Frankl of Winona, MN; Steve and Patience Frankl of Port Washington, WI, and their children Cooper and Avery; and Sara Frankl of Cedar Falls. He is also survived by his parents, Gerald and Rita Frankl of Cherokee; eight brothers and sisters, Dr. Patrick Frankl (Sondra) of Corydon, Ron Frankl (Pam) of LuVerne, Bernard Frankl (Micky) of Rutland, Gene Frankl (Jean) of Des Moines, Tim Frankl (Darlene) of Sioux City, Annette Meyers (Jim) of Larrabee, Donald Frankl (Kate) of Jefferson, SD, and Janella (Ron) Reicks of Cherokee; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David Grandgenett (Lorrie) of Grimes, Mary (Bill) Cruise of Wesley, Alice Simmons of Carroll, and Jon Green of Nisswa, MN; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Robert Grandgenett; and a sister-in-law, Judy Green.

Some people stay for awhile and give us a deeper understanding of what is truly important in this life.
They touch our souls. We gain strength from the footprints they have left on our hearts and we will never be the same.

Dear Jane and Family,
We have been praying for all of you, that the Lord our God, Father and Savior, carry you gently and tenderly through these days as you face the lost of your beloved husband and father. The best words of consolation are difficult to find so we trust that our promise of prayer and mindful support will find a place in your grieving.
Distance separated us somewhat, but out closest and dearest friends, Jon and Judy Green, always maintained the connection and helped us grow the friendship we feel for Mike and Jane. It is hard to accept that Judy is gone, and now, Mike. Your families have endured so much, yet we believe that Providence gave you wonderful years with truly beautiful people. If only it could have been a longer time…..
Our admiration for Mike was strong because his strength of character and honor was easily apparent. If he left that impression with us, it is not difficult to imagine the legacy he gave to all of you. God bless you all.
We are truly sorry that our travel to Algona to be with you is not possible. Please know that our hearts are there.
Dave and JoAnn Loch
